Lutz, Weitz earn prestigious award from Oxford University

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – JCPenney Professor of Marketing Dr. Richard Lutz and JCPenney Eminent Scholar Chair of Retail Management Dr. Barton Weitz were awarded the Best Published Paper Award (2009) by Oxford University’s Centre for Corporate Reputation. Dr. Lutz and Dr. Weitz share the award with Dr. Tillmann Wagner, a professor of marketing at WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management in Germany. Dr. Wagner was previously a Doctoral Visiting Research Fellow at the Warrington College of Business Administration in 2004.

Dr. Lutz, Dr. Weitz and Dr. Wagner were honored for their work “Corporate Hypocrisy: Overcoming the Threat of Inconsistent Corporate Social Responsibility Perceptions” which appeared in Journal of Marketing. According to the Centre for Corporate Reputation, “the paper’s major contribution to reputation literature lies in the introduction of the concept of corporate hypocrisy beliefs, caused by inconsistent information about a firm’s behavior contrary to their states standard of social responsibility.”

The authors donated their £1000 prize money to the World Wildlife Fund, Gulf Oil Spill Relief Fund.

The Centre for Corporate Reputation in an independent research center “which aims to promote a better understanding of the way in which the reputations of corporations and institutions around the world are created, sustained, enhanced, destroyed and rehabilitated.”
