Warrington advisor Derek Guffin named UF Advisor of the Year

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Derek Guffin, an advisor in the School of Business at the Warrington College of Business Administration, was named University of Florida Advisor of the Year on Wednesday.

“I am grateful to have represented the School of Business at the 2010-2011 UF Teaching and Advising Awards ceremony, and stand behind our mission of empowering students with the tools, resources, and motivation necessary to achieve personal success,” Guffin said. “It was an honor to be at this awards ceremony with such influential faculty and advisors, and an even greater honor to be selected among them for this Advisor of the Year award. I receive this distinguished honor with a sincere gratitude and joy in my heart.”

Guffin, who was named the Warrington College of Business Administration Advisor of the Year in January, advises undergraduates who are Finance and Information Systems majors. He earned a BS in Sports Management from UF in 2004 and an MS in Higher Education in 2007.

Guffin is the second advisor from the School of Business to win UF’s Advisor of the Year in the last four years. Kari Ward, now an Assistant Director for the School of Business’ Online Business Program, won the award for the 2007-08 academic year.

“I have come to realize a University of Florida education is about two things: Access and opportunities,” Guffin said. “My advice to business majors is to take advantage of the access you have to influential professors, advisors, and professionals around you, and to jump on leadership, academic, and career opportunities while in college to develop yourself into the leader you aspire to.”
