DiMatteo awarded grant from Bob Graham Center for Public Service

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –Huber Hurst Professor of Contract Law & Legal Studies Dr. Larry A. DiMatteo has been awarded a case study grant from the Bob Graham Center for Public Service.
The Center sponsors a competitive grant competition and requested proposals from throughout the University community. Dr. DiMatteo was one of four grant recipients this year.

The name of Dr. DiMatteo’s proposed case study is Choosing Values: Public-Private Relationships in a Global Economy. The case study investigates the tension between corporate responsibility and sustainability in a global economy. The case aims to direct students in practical-ethical decision-making. The case study’s objectives include the development of a knowledge base (techniques for practical business and ethical decision-making), as well as research, issue-spotting, negotiation, and presentation skills. The case study will create educational frameworks, materials, processes and environments that enable effective learning experiences for responsible leadership. Dr. DiMatteo said the grant will allow him to expand his international business law research agenda to include an ethical component.

Said Dr. DiMatteo: “It will allow me to think out of the box of a narrow legal perspective to issues to a broader analysis of the different stakeholders that include ones without any legal duties or rights under the law.”

The case study method of teaching is used extensively by the nation’s colleges and universities to illustrate the issues and dynamics inherent in the critical choices facing business and government. Case studies are written analyses of a situation confronting an individual, organization, government official or entity, followed by a description of the tactics and strategies employed by the main characters to solve problems and issues arising from the situation. Topics can range from local government or individual attempts to resolve a community conflict to issues plaguing public policy on the state, federal or international front.
