Q: Tell us about your background. Where are you from?

Kaboyo: “I’m from Uganda, a beautiful country in East Africa known for its vibrant culture, diverse wildlife and warm-hearted people. I attended one of the best high schools in Uganda, St. Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK), where I developed a strong academic foundation and a deep appreciation for community. Afterward, I moved to China where I completed my undergraduate degree in mechanical design manufacturing and automation at Tianjin University. My experiences in China broadened my perspective on life and taught me the importance of adaptability and cross-cultural understanding. It also made me appreciate Uganda’s stunning natural landscapes – from the shores of Lake Victoria to the Rwenzori Mountains – making me proud to represent my country on the global stage.”

Q: Why did you choose the Master of International Business program?

Kaboyo: “The MIB program at UF offered the perfect combination of global business perspectives and hands-on learning. I was drawn to UF’s strong emphasis on cultural diversity and its reputation for fostering innovative thinkers. This program aligns with my goal of bridging the gap between local and international business practices, equipping me with skills to drive positive global change.”

Q: What are you missing from home?

Kaboyo: “I miss the warmth and closeness of my community back home in Uganda. There’s a unique sense of connection among family and friends that I’ve always cherished. I also miss the local food, especially dishes like matooke and Rolex, which are hard to find here. Uganda’s vibrant music and dance remind me of the joy and energy of my culture, and being here has made me appreciate these traditions even more.”

Q: What do you like about living in Gainesville?

Kaboyo: “One of the best things about Gainesville is the vibrant and diverse campus life. I’ve enjoyed the football environment here – there’s so much excitement and school spirit during game days. I also love playing pickleball with friends, which has been a fun way to stay active and make new connections. The diverse international communities, including groups from China, Europe and beyond, have allowed me to meet people worldwide and learn from their unique perspectives.”

Q: Tell us a cool fact about yourself.

Kaboyo: “I love exploring languages and am passionate about connecting with people from different backgrounds. I’m currently learning Spanish to add to my language skills in English and Chinese. I love traveling when the opportunity arises, and my highlight of the year was seeing the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. I also enjoy cooking, so if I’m not at Hough Hall, I’m in my kitchen learning “how to make butter chicken” on YouTube. I also play chess a lot, and I’m always open to challenges.”

Q: Anything else you’d like to share?

Kaboyo: “I’m grateful for the journey that’s brought me here – from Uganda to China and now to the U.S. Every step has taught me the importance of adaptability, cultural understanding and resilience. I hope to inspire others to embrace new experiences and keep pushing their limits.”
