Q: Tell us about yourself.

Jakubowicz: “My name is Melanie, and I am pursuing my Master of Science in Management degree and will graduate next month. I am also a current tutor with the UF Athletic Association and the former director of public relations for the Hough Ambassadors. I was born and raised in Hollywood, Florida and I love going to the beach, visiting nature parks and seeing some of my favorite EDM artists around the country. I was a former speech and debate competitor, contributing to my love for public speaking. I received my undergraduate degree in public relations from UF’s College of Journalism and Communications and plan to combine my passions for communications and business post-graduation.

Q: Why did you enroll in the MSM combination degree program?

Jakubowicz: “I joined the MSM combination degree program to gain a foundation in business and supplement my undergraduate degree. At the time I applied, knowing the program is tailored to students like me with no previous business background made joining less intimidating. After researching and learning more, I recognized the invaluable advantages of joining the program including career advancement, networking opportunities, skill development and, most importantly, the ability to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to become a successful leader and industry professional. Once I began the program, I realized how deep support and motivation runs among the faculty, staff and other students – making me feel at ease and part of the Hough community.”

Q: What do you like most about the MSM program?

Jakubowicz: “My favorite aspect of the MSM program was the collaborative nature of the coursework. Working alongside diverse peers from various backgrounds expanded my perspectives and enhanced my teamwork and leadership abilities to work effectively together. Being exposed to people with multiple viewpoints and learning styles contributed to my growth and success in the program. Additionally, by joining the Hough Ambassadors, I fully immersed myself in the graduate student experience through planning social and professional events and creating engaging social media content to promote the program. These combined experiences equipped me with a deep understanding of management principles and the ability to form long-lasting relationships with peers and professors.”

Q: What are your professional career plans after graduation?

Jakubowicz: “After graduation, I plan to work in marketing and public relations. My experience as a communications intern in New York City at STV Inc., an architectural services company, and Medidata Solutions, a life sciences technology company, has well-prepared me to enter this field. I look forward to using the knowledge and skills I gained throughout my time as an MSM student and during my internships as I enter my professional career.”

Q: Any advice for incoming students?

Jakubowicz: “Be confident and know how to be an effective communicator. Enhance your time management skills by using a planner to set priorities and breaking tasks into manageable bits to stay organized. Stay curious, come in with an open mindset and actively engage with the program content. Always ask questions, participate in discussions and seek additional learning opportunities when possible. At the end of the day, what you put into the program is what you get out of it and your enthusiasm and engagement will make all the difference.”

Q: What do you wish you’d known before starting the program?

Jakubowicz: “Starting the MSM combination program is not just a step in your academic journey, but a transformative experience. One thing I wish I had known before starting is the importance of building a strong network. Don’t hesitate to seek mentorship from professors, industry professionals and even other students you look up to. Mentors can provide guidance, introduce you to their networks and help you navigate your career path. By prioritizing networking from the outset, you can improve your academic experience, open doors to career opportunities and build a supportive community that will benefit you long after graduation.”

Q: Tell us a cool fact about yourself.

Jakubowicz: “Two years ago, I went to Israel with UF Hillel on a Birthright program. The trip was full of exciting adventures such as visiting Tel Aviv’s bustling street markets, hiking Masada and the Sea of Galilee, floating in the Dead Sea and trying some of the best food in Jerusalem. However, my favorite part was spending a night in a Bedouin tent in the Negev Desert. This experience with other UF students gifted me amazing friends, memories and stories that I will never forget.”
