Huber Hurst Professor publishes book on AI and consumer law
Artificial Intelligence is everywhere. The media can’t seem to get enough of it – but that’s because AI is rapidly gaining prevalence in every industry and influencing society in general.
Huber Hurst Professor Larry DiMatteo addresses AI’s influences in his latest book, The Cambridge Handbook of AI and Consumer Law: Comparative Perspectives. Particularly, the book exposes readers to consumer manipulation by AI and discusses its dimensions from legal, societal and ethical perspectives.
Dr. DiMatteo’s research has expanded over the past five years to study the intersection of law and technology, but it was at an international research conference in 2023, funded by the universities of Galway and Florida, that the idea for the book took form. The possibility of regulating AI excites DiMatteo, especially to guard against the manipulation of consumers.
Since publishing his book, DiMatteo has modified his courses at the Warrington College of Business to include this research and updated the fifth edition of his textbook on international business law to include a new chapter, titled “Digital Economy and Acceleration of Technology.” His upcoming book, Metaverse and Law, will be his seventh in a series on law and technology that DiMatteo has published over the last five years. His related research on the governance of AI was recently awarded the 2024 Virginia Maurer Best Ethics Paper at the annual meeting of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business in Washington, D.C.
