DBA student wins Best Academic Paper at prestigious conference

Rahul Banerjee (DBA ‘25) won the “Best Academic Paper” award at the Global Information Technology Management Association (GITMA) Conference in Sakarya, Turkey.

At this conference, he presented his dissertation entitled “Can AI truly learn? The role of consumer’s lay beliefs in algorithmic aversion.” Written alongside marketing faculty member and City Furniture Professor Aner Sela, Banerjee’s research explored individual’s beliefs of intelligence and how it influenced their perception and acceptance of AI.

“Attending the GITMA Conference at Sakarya University in Turkey was an incredible experience,” Banerjee said. “It brought together a global community of scholars and practitioners who are deeply engaged in advancing technology and management research. The exchange of ideas, the diversity of perspectives and the opportunity to connect with researchers from around the world made it both intellectually enriching and personally memorable.”

Banerjee’s presentation was his first time sharing his research on an international stage. His findings sparked meaningful discussion and thoughtful questions to consider the implications of his work more broadly.

“Winning the Best Academic Paper award is more than just a recognition—it’s a sign that my research has relevance and impact beyond the academic world,” Banerjee said. “It also reaffirmed my commitment to being a practitioner-researcher and creating work that bridges theory and practice.”

Throughout the DBA program, Banerjee has also maintained his role as the Global Go to Market leader for Technology Transformation Services at Wipro; this award also emphasizes the importance of industry professionals in academia and research.

“The experience has definitely boosted my confidence as both a scholar and a practitioner,” Banerjee said. It opened up networking opportunities with researchers and institutions I wouldn’t have otherwise connected with. Professionally, it reinforced the value of integrating evidence-based insights into real-world decision-making, which is at the core of what I hope to continue doing post-graduation.”

“This recognition isn’t just a personal win—it’s a reflection of the quality and spirit of the program as a whole,” Banerjee said.

Banerjee would like to thank Professor Sela, the DBA program and the broader UF community for stretching him intellectually while reinforcing practical impact.

Banerjee will complete his DBA at the end of the 2025 summer term.
