How journalism students can benefit from a Master of Science in Management degree

By Emma Magee

My journey towards the MSM program was an unconventional one. I was a senior public relations major here at UF with experience, knowledge and ambition to start working as fast as I could. I thought I was ready to start my career in marketing, and in most ways I was. However, it wasn’t until my internship with a global fashion company that I realized I wanted more. I wanted to know how a large corporation functioned. I wanted to understand how to manage large budgets, correctly segment customers and how to leverage marketing into profitable results.

After knowing I wanted to further my education, where was I to start? I had a few friends who completed the MSM program, and I began to have conversations about how it would impact my career. I can confidently say that this program will change your life in more ways than one. From the faculty to personal advisors to some of the greatest friends I’ve ever made, this program has given me not only excellent skills but a family.

As I enter my fifth and final module of this program, I am left to reflect on what will become my greatest year at the University of Florida. To be in a program that celebrates cultural differences, embraces every career path, and gives each student the most individualized experience is truly a once in a lifetime experience. I will be forever grateful for late nights in the study rooms, professors that take the patience to help you succeed and the amazing group of individuals within the walls of Hough Hall.

What I can say to any undergraduate Journalism School student is this: the business school is not scary. Yes, it is challenging, but it will be one of the most rewarding things you will ever do here at UF. The differentiation you will have with both degrees will open more doors, give you a competitive edge, and allow you to utilize your communications skills in an effective way. I’ve been pushed to new limits and achieved more than I ever thought possible.

As I finish this program, I am humbled and grateful for the experiences, knowledge and encouragement I have received over the last year. They say that we are all products of those who we surround ourselves, and there is no better group to be surrounded by than your colleagues in the MSM program.
